PROGRAMMES

Schools of Special Education

The largest and oldest special education institution in Jamaica. This forerunner institution was founded in 1956.
The schools are operated jointly by the JAMR and the Ministry of Education and provide educational services to children 6-20 years old, through a network of schools at 27 locations across the island.

It's motto "Learning for Life," seeks to unleash the full potential of each student.


Early Intervention Programme

This programme provides stimulation for children from birth - 6yrs who have mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. It prepares them for appropriate school placement.

A collaborative project of the JAMR and the German organization, Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM). It currently operates in Westmoreland and is centre-based as well as home-based.

Parents and Professionals in Partnership (PProP)

PProP, the parent support group of the JAMR, was established in 1994 to offer:
  • parent training and advocacy
  • a parent support network
  • a medium for parent and professional interaction

Resource Programme

This programme provides intensive individualized remedial instruction in language arts and mathematics for at-risk primary and secondary school students. It is currently available in Greater Portmore Learning Centre in St Catherine and Llandillo School of Special Education in Savannah la mar, Westmoreland.

Teachers target areas of weakness, enhance strengths, and build independence in specific learning strategies and study skills.

Adult Continuing Education Programme

This vocational-based training programme for young adults with severe mental retardation was started in 1989. In addition to vocational skills development, significant emphasis is placed on social and recreational skills.

Primary Intervention Programme (PIP)

PIP is an intervention programme geared towards primary school children at risk for academic failure. It is supported by JAMR and the Ministry of Education.

PIP special educators train, consult, and mentor regular educators to improve their students’ performance.
